Supervision

Finding the right supervisor is important! To help with your decision, feel free to ask  me questions by email or phone, to discuss your particular supervision needs – you can send me a message here

About supervision…

Professional supervision gives you the opportunity to reflect on your work in a focused, supportive environment, building confidence and effectiveness. We discuss work relevant issues, including your challenges and successes, safety, ethics, theory, tools, ongoing professional development and identity, and of course, your self care (NZAC Code of Ethics– see section 9). Screen shot 2014-10-28 at 8.03.37 PM

I’m trained in narrative, collaborative and strengths-based frameworks that help ensure Supervision is a constructive process, accessing and respecting your own wisdom and insights and paying attention to all aspects of your wellbeing. As in my Counselling and Couple Therapy work where I draw on range of modalities relevant to clients’ particular needs and interests (eg. Narrative, Internal Family Systems, ACT, Mind/body awareness, EMDR…) so too in Supervision we will explore what’s helpful and relevant for your work and aligned with your own training and professional development. A supervision contract, clear goals and regular reviews also help ensure the process stays on track with your needs and the goals in your workplace.

About me…

I’ve worked in various community settings providing Counselling, Family Therapy, Couples Therapy, supervision and counselling education over the past 22 years,  now working in private practice from central Auckland. I trained in Social work and Counselling at Unitec, later attending Waikato University  studying Family and Couple Counselling and Supervision (also Auckland Uni’s Advanced Supervision training). My early focus was primarily Narrative and Constructive approaches, with trainings added over the years in Family Systems, Solution Focused and Strengths Based approaches, ACT,  Somatic and movement approaches (including Open Floor dance/movement therapy), EMDR and specifically Trauma informed therapies, and more recently Internal Family Systems (IFS). Extensive Couple Therapy training has also been invaluable (including ACT,  Gottman, Imago, Mediation and Conflict Resolution training for Family Court work).

I began work with Presbyterian Support/Family Works in 2002, gradually expanding into staff training and programme development, supervision work, Strengthening Families facilitation, and Family Court counselling. Agency work led to knowledge of Auckland’s community and social services, and a role as community coordinator for WAVES Trust (West Auckland’s family violence resource network), while also lecturing part-time in Unitec’s Social Practice Degree. I’m grateful for all these experiences and the many people I’ve learned from (especially clients!).

Nowdays I’m in private practice from Letham Cottage, Ponsonby, also working online from home in the Waitakere Ranges. As an NZAC member (20+ yrs) its a given that I attend regular supervision and professional development, both integral to my work.
